Lighting in three layers: the fastest upgrade in any room

Layer one: ambient

This is the base glow. A floor lamp bounced off a wall or ceiling does it better than a central fixture, because indirect light has no hard shadow line.

Layer two: task

Light exactly where you read, cook or work, at or just below eye level, never behind your head where it throws your own shadow onto the page.

Layer three: accent

One small low light, a table lamp on a console, a picture light, gives a room depth after dark. It is the layer most people skip and the one that makes a space feel styled.

Keep every bulb the same temperature

Mixed colour temperatures are the single most common reason a well-furnished room still looks off. Standardise at 2700K warm white throughout and put the main sources on dimmers.
